South of Market is a vast district, spanning from the Embarcadero to Eleventh Street, between Market and Townsend. SOMA features an abundance of warehouses, swanky nightspots, art spaces, loft apartments, showrooms and is home to various startups and tech companies. Most of the action can be found in three general areas: by South Park and the Giants ballpark, around the SF MOMA and Yerba Buena Gardens, and the nightlife options of Folsom and Eleventh Streets. The western end of the district is the most industrial, and is dominated by huge wholesale marts and superstores like Costco, Trader Joe’s and Bed, Bath & Beyond. The eastern portion of SOMA, commonly referred to as South Beach, is plush with luxury high rise buildings. The area around Market and Third Street is more influenced by the nearby Financial District and conventions at the Moscone Center. Several of the city’s arts organizations are located here, including the SF MOMA and the Center for the Arts at Yerba Gardens. No matter where you find yourself in SOMA, you’ll be sure to stumble upon lots of hidden treasures and colorful urban charm.
